TED Talk: 5 ways to listen better

Listen to this interesting talk! In our louder and louder world, says sound expert Julian Treasure, “We are losing our listening.” He discusses five ways to re-tune your ears for conscious listening — to other people and the world around you:

  1. Silence: Listen to no sound for 3 minutes a day helps to reset our ears so that we can listen well.
  2. The Mixer: Even in places like coffee shop, try to listen to as many individual channels as you can hear. This way, ears hear multiple sounds and differentiate.
  3. Savouring: This tip is about enjoying the most mundane sounds, as in as in listening to a dryer of a washing machine.
  4. Listening positions: This is about active listening. By taking notes, expand on what was said or being critical, one can me conscious of barriers/filters to listening and play around with them.
  5. RASA: The acronym stands for Receive, Appreciate, Summary, Ask (RASA). This means paying attention, showing you’re listening, summarising what they said, and asking a question at the end.
